About Us
History
Welcome to the website of the Joseph Montfort Chapter, NSDAR. The chapter was chartered on February 16, 1946, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and we recently celebrated our 75th Anniversary.
The organizing regent of the chapter was a teacher, principal, and researcher. She initially joined DAR in 1930 from McAdenville, North Carolina. After World War II she had returned to her hometown near Jacksonville, where she organized a new DAR chapter. She and seven other charter members were descendants of Captain Joseph Montfort. Thus the chapter name was chosen to honor him.
Joseph Montfort is recognized by DAR for his ranks of Lieutenant and Captain in the Continental Army, and Patriotic Service as a prisoner of war in Charleston. His military service continued in the US Army after the American Revolutionary War, and he died in 1792 while making the Northwest Territory, now Ohio, safe for settlers.
Since the chapter’s founding, the Jacksonville area has grown, attracting families of military members and retirees from many states besides North Carolina. Our chapter Patriots reflect this diversity. Our active members include young working mothers and ladies enjoying their retirement. Their common link is a desire to serve the community.
Many members have a close connection to Camp Lejeune and our patriotic activities reflect that. We enjoy hearing about historic preservation in Onslow County and support the maintenance of the more recent memorials to the Marine and Navy members. We also support education in the community through essay contests and community classroom activities.
Meetings
We meet monthly August through May. Our meetings consist of a program, business session and lunch, and an afternoon social event in December.
We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand the DAR organization and especially our chapter. You will learn more about our chapter by going to the What We Do webpage to read about some of the things that we do throughout the year.
Please contact us for the meeting dates and location.
